As a business owner, there are a few file types available to save, backup, and share your data with your accountant. When you store your data file in your hard disk or other media, QuickBooks always save it with .QBW extension (W stands for “working” file). When you backup your company file using the program backup feature, QuickBooks always saves it with .QBB extension (B stands for “backup” file). You then have to restore your backup file using the restore feature to work on it. Portable file and Accountant’s Copy file are also available to share your data with your bookkeeper or accountant.
Below is the list of available data file types:
.QBW QuickBooks (Windows) regular working file
This is what we usually called a company file. To open another company file while you are working on a file, go to file > Open or Restore Company > Open a Company File and choose your file to open.
.QBB Backup file generated from your working file
To make a backup of your company file, go to
• File > Create Backup > select Online backup or Local backup; or
• File > Create Copy > Backup Copy > select Online backup or Local backup.
.QBM Compressed version or your company file (.QBW)
You use this .QBM, reduced sized file, to email your company file to others. To make a Portable file, go to File > Create Copy > Portable company file.
