QB Finding Item Error 1

If your item has only one mapped account, such as the above Heavy Equipment Rental, then finding an error from your Item List is easy to do - you can identify the error by checking the Account column.

However, how if you have inventory items that have two-sided accounts, meaning this item is mapped into two different accounts: one account for selling the products/services and another account for purchasing it?  How can you find it from your item list?

1.    Item Lists Customization
One way to review this two-sided item is to customize your item list:  right click the above window and choose Customize Columns from the drop down menu to open the Customize Columns dialog box below:

Next, choose the COGS Account from the Available Columns (highlighted above), click Add bar, and OK.  You will then see that the COGS Account you just added appear in the Chosen Columns pane.  The Item Lists window will reappear with added COGS Account (most right column):

Now, with the Account and COGS Account displayed in your Item Lists, you can easily identify which item mapping is correct or incorrect.  Take a look at Fasteners (highlighted) that is assigned Sales accounts in both Account and COGS Account.  This is definitely a mistake in the COGS Account assignment and you can rectify it by editing and changing the account in the Purchase Information pane.

2.    Item Lists Report
Another way to review your Item Lists is from the Reports > List > Items Listing.  Click Customize Report bar on top left side to open Modify Report:Item Listing dialog box:

Choose accounts to be displayed, such as Item, Description, Type, Account, Asset Account, COGS Account, Sales Tax Code, COGS Account, and deselect other accounts that are not required but selected by default:

Similarly, you can pinpoint where the item is incorrectly mapped from this report.  You can then edit and update your item accordingly.
