2.    Select “Portable company file” button and click Next to open Save portable Company file dialog box. QuickBooks will automatically add .QBM extension to your file.

3.    You can rename your file and click Save to save.

4.    If creating a portable company file successful, the program will give a message:

Click OK to finish.

 

Opening/Restoring a Portable Company File


Opening a portable company file is similar to opening a backup file, i.e. you have to restore it. You can’t open it like you open a working company file .QBW:

1.    From Main Menu > File > Open or Restore Company  to open its dialog box:

2.    Select “Restore a portable file” button and click Next to open Open Portable Company File dialog box.  QuickBooks will automatically look for .QBM extension. Choose your portable company file .QBM from your folder and click Open.

3.    An Open or Restore Company window will pop up:

This window is a warning that if you restore the portable file to your regular company file folder, you will overwrite your existing company file. If this is your intention, then you can go ahead. Otherwise, rename your file or choose different folder. Click Next.

4.    Save Company File As window will open.  You can use the same file name or rename it here.
If you are restoring a portable company file to an existing company file, QuickBooks warns you that you are going to overwrite the existing company file.  If this is your intention, click Yes and type Yes to confirm.

5.    If restoring a portable company file is successful, the program will show a message:
